    • n milium A genus of grasses of the tribe Agrostideæ and the subtribe Stipeæ, characterized by an ovoid glume, rigid or hardened about the caryopsis, and an awn-less flowering glume. They are annuals or perennials, with flat leaves and a compound panicle of one-flowered spikelets. There are 5 or 6 species, natives of Europe, temperate Asia, and North America. The genus bears the common name of millet-grass. M. effusum, widely spread through the northern hemisphere, is a tall handsome grass which thrives in dense shade. Its herbage is relished by cattle, and its seed by birds.
