- n grassfinch A granivorous fringilline bird; any one of sundry species of Fringillidœ that live in the grass or feed on grass-seeds. Specifically— The bay-winged bunting or vesper-bird of North America, Poœcetes gramineus, a common sparrow about 6 ½ inches long, with bay lesser wing-coverts and white lateral tail-feathers.
