    • n pomatomus A genus of carangoid fishes, the type of the family Pomatomidæ, containing only the well-known bluefish, greenfish, or skipjack, P. saltatrix. This fish was called by Linnæus Gasterosteus saltatrix, and by Cuvier Temnodon saltator. It is common in nearly all warm and some temperate seas, attains a length of from 2 to 3 feet, and is highly valued as a food-fish, besides being prized for sporting. It is extremely voracious and destructive to other fishes. See cut under bluefish.
