Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia
    • n pinnotheres A genus of small crustaceans, typical of the family Pinnotheriidæ, so called because they inhabit the shells of pinnas and other bivalve mollusks, as oysters; the pea-crabs. One of the best-known is P. ostreum, the little crab frequently found in the American oyster (Ostrea virginica), which when cooked is of a delicate flesh-color with a red band. P. pisum, the European pea-crab proper, inhabits mussels. P. veterum was known to the ancients as inhabiting the pinnas in the Mediterranean. See cut under peacrab.
