    • n lory One of a large number of parrots constituting the subfamily Loriinæ, or forming a separate family Trichoglossidæ; any brush-tongued parrakeet, or lorikeet. They are mostly of small size and brilliant coloration, inhabiting parts of Asia, the Malay archipelago, and Oceania. Lorius domicella is a characteristic example. All the lories properly so called are trichoglossine or brush-tongued, excepting those of the genus Loriculus (or Coryllis); but the name extends to some similar parrakeets of a different group, as those of the genus Eclectus. See Lorius, Loriculus, Loriinæ, and Trichoglossinæ. See also cut under Domicella.
    • n lory In Africa, the white-crested turakoo, Turacus corythaix or T. albo-cristatus, one of the plantain-eaters: probably so called on account of its green color and high crest, which suggest a parrot.
