    • n kino A well-known drug resembling catechu, consisting of the gum of several trees belonging to the tropics. It is a more or less brittle substance, in general of a dark reddish-brown color in the mass. Its chief component is tannic acid, and it thus becomes a powerful astringent. Its leading use is medicinal, but it is also employed in India in dyeing cotton, giving the color called nankeen. The kinds may be classified according to their source, East Indian, Malabar, or Am-boyna kino is the product of the leguminous tree Pterocarpus Marsupium of India and Ceylon. It is the kind most extensively used, and the only kino of the British Pharmacopœia.
