    • n Hematite (Min) An important ore of iron, the sesquioxide, so called because of the red color of the powder. It occurs in splendent rhombohedral crystals, and in massive and earthy forms; -- the last called red ocher. Called also specular iron oligist iron rhombohedral iron ore, and bloodstone. • n hematite Native anhydrous iron sesquioxid, or redoxid of iron, Fe2O3. It crystallizes in the rhombohedral system, and occurs in iron-black crystals with brilliant metallic luster (called specular iron and iron-glance), also in thin tabular crystals or scales, often red by transmitted light. More commonly it is massive, with structure varying from compact to foliated and micaceous (iron-mica or micaceous iron ore), also to columnar and fibrous, and further to earthy (red ocher) and impure argillaceous (ironstone) kinds”. All varieties have a red streak. It is one of the most valuable ores of iron, and is mined in large quantities, as in the Marquette region of Lake Superior. It is sometimes called bloodstone and oligiste iron (fer oligiste); also often red hematite, to distinguish it from the related hydrated ore, brown hematite, or limonite, which has a brown streak. See cut under reniform.
    • n hematite An intaglio cut in hematite.
