    • n elution the process of extracting one material from another by washing with a solvent to remove adsorbed material from an adsorbent (as in washing of loaded ion-exchange resins to remove captured ions); used to obtain uranium ions

    • n elution A washing out; any process by which bodies are separated by the action of a solvent; specifically, a process of recovering sugar from molasses, which consists in precipitating the sugar as sucrate of lime, insoluble in cold water, and washing it free from soluble impurities. The sucrate is decomposed by carbonic acid, which precipitates the lime as carbonate, and the pure sugar-solution is then evaporated to crystallization.

In LC-MS, a reverse phase liquid chromatography (LC) column is typically used to separate the resulting peptide ‘species’ based on their hydrophobicity, and an MS spectrum, or scan, is taken of them periodically as they elute.

The collection of scans from a single experiment may be viewed as a three-dimensional landscape of peaks located in elution time (t) and mass/charge (m/z ) space.
