• Interesting fact: Honorificabilitudinitatibus is the longest English word that consists strictly of alternating consonants and vowels
• alternating Specifically, in electricity, periodicaliy reversing or changing the direction in such a manner that the total effect in one direction is the same as in the opposite direction. An alternating current is a current consisting of a series of half-waves of equal duration and equal intensity but opposite direction. One half-wave is called an alternation, two successive half-waves, or a complete wave, a cycle. The number of cycles per second is the frequency. Commercial frequencies are 25, 60, and 125 cycles per second. Since the alternating current varies from instant to instant, the square-root of the mean square of the instantaneous values is commonly employed and called the effective value of the alternating current, since it represents the effect or power of the latter. Under alternating current, alternating electromotive force, etc., usually the effective value is understood. If the successive half-waves gradually decrease in intensity, the current is called an oscillating current. Oscillating currents usually have frequencies of hundred thousands and millions of cycles per second. They are produced by condenser discharges and are used in wireless telegraphy, etc.

In the first step, we apply two of the four operators to the prime alternating knots of minimal crossing size n to produce a subset of the set of prime alternating knots of minimal crossing size n + 1.
Enumerating the Prime Alternating Knots, Part I
Two of the four, D and ROT S , take a prime alternating knot configuration with n crossings and return a prime alternating knot configuration with n + 1 crossings, while the other two operators do not change the number of crossings.

C (K ) is a configuration of a prime alternating knot and D is applied to any crossing of C (K ), the result is a configuration C (K ′ ) of a prime alternating knot K ′ of one higher crossing size.
Enumerating the Prime Alternating Knots, Part I
By Proposition 1, if we apply T to a turnable subgroup of some prime alternating knot, the result is a configuration of a prime alternating knot.
Enumerating the Prime Alternating Knots, Part I
We establish now that when T is applied to a turnable-subgroup, the result is a configuration of an alternating knot, hence by Proposition 1, a configuration of a prime alternating knot.

To aid us in the proof of this result, we introduce three categories of prime alternating knots, which have the property that each prime alternating knot belongs to exactly one category.
Enumerating the Prime Alternating Knots, Part I
Conceptually, a prime alternating knot configuration is a KA configuration if it can be obtained from a prime alternating knot configuration of one lower crossing size by a single application of either the D or the ROT S operator (under the restrictions listed at the beginning of this section).

Theorem 3. A prime alternating knot configuration is a KA configuration if it can be obtained from a prime alternating knot configuration of one lower crossing size by a single application of either D to a negative group, a loner, or a positive 2-group, or the ROT S operator to a negative 2-group or 3-group.
Enumerating the Prime Alternating Knots, Part I
Consequently, one may select any prime alternating link of minimal crossing size n (which is then called the seed link), and repeatedly apply only the operators T and OT S to obtain all prime alternating links of minimal crossing size n from the chosen seed link.
