Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia
- n steatornis The representative genus of Steatomithidæ. The only species is S. caripensis, the guacharo or oil-bird of South America, found from Veneznela to Tern, and also in Trinidad, of frugivorous and nocturnal habits. The bird resembles and is usually classed with the goatsuckers. It is so fat that the natives prepare from it a kind of oil used for butter. See cut under guacharo.
