- n spoonwood The mountainlaurel or calico-bush, Kalmia latifolia, of the eastern United States. It is commonly a shrub, but in the Alleghanies southward becomes a tree 20 or 30 feet high. Its wood is hard and heavy, and is used for toolhandles, in turnery, and for fuel. The leaves are considered poisonous, and have a slight medicinal repute. See cut under Kalmia.
