- n scolymus A genus of plants of the family Asteraceæ. It contains three species, natives of the Mediterranean region. S. Hispanicus, the Spanish oyster-plant or golden thistle, is sometimes cultivated for its edible root, which is used like that of salsify. Other species are rarely grown for ornament.
