- n recurvirostra A genus of precocial limicoline grallatorial birds, type of the family Recurrirostridæ, having a long and very slender depressed and recurved bill, extremely long slender legs, and four toes, the three front ones of whieh are webbed; the avosets. The body is depressed, and the under parts are clothed with thick plumage like a duck's, so that the birds swim with ease by means of their webbed feet. See avoset. Also called Avocetta.
