    • n porifera The sponges as a prime division of cœlenterates, or superclass of Cœlentera, having a system of pores or incurrent and excurrent openings, but no stinging-organs: contrasted with Nematophora, and more fully called Cœlentera porifera. It is a name of sponges when these are regarded as cœlenterates, to distinguish them from the true cœlenterates, then called Nematophora. A usual division of Porifera is into Calcispongiæ or Megamastictora, the chalk-sponges; and Silicospongiæ or Micromastictora, all other sponges; but nearly every writer on sponges has his own classification. See Spongiæ, and cuts under sponge and Spongilla. Also called Poriferata.
