Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia
    • n polyergus A genus of Formicidæ, having the mandibles almost cylindrical, curved, very narrow, and acute at the tip, ocelli present, and the wings of the female with only one discoidal cell: the Amazon-ants. Two species are found in the United States, but most are tropical or subtropical. P. rufescens is a slave-making ant which has lost the building instinct and shows no care for its young, and in which the mandibles have lost their teeth—all as a result of their entire dependence upon slaves.
