    • holotricha An order of free-swimming infusorians, more or less completely ciliate throughout. The cilia differ but slightly one from another, and are sometimes supplemented by a variously modified extensile or undulating membrane. The oral and anal orifices are usually conspicuously developed. The cuticular layer or ectoplasm not unfrequently contains trichocysts. The order is contrasted with Heterotricha, Hypotricha, and Peritricha.
