    • n Hidalgo In Spain, a man belonging to the lower nobility; a gentleman by birth. The special privileges formerly possessed by the hidalgos (among which was the exclusive right to the appellative Don) made them as a class self-important, haughty, and domineering, though many of them were not otherwise distinguished from the class below them. These privileges were abrogated on the establishment of constitutional government.
