    • n heterotheca A small genus of North American and Mexican herbs, belonging to the natural order Compositæ, tribe Asteroideœ, the type of De Candolle's tribe Heterotheceæ It is characterized by having the ray- and disk-flowers numerous, and both fertile; the style-branches of the hermaphrodite flowers tipped with a lanceolate or ovate triangular appendage; the achenia of the ray thickish, often triangular, without pappus, or rarely with a bristle or two; the disk compressed, and with a double pappus, the inner composed of long capillary bristles, the outer of numerous short squammæ; the leaves alternate; the flowers yellow; and the pappus brownish.
