- n gasterophilus A leading genus of dipterous insects, of the family Œstridæ, or bot-flies, several species of which infest the horse and ass. G. equi is the common bot-fly of the horse, which lays its eggs on the skin, whence they are transferred to the stomach by the animal in licking itself, there to hatch into the larvæ or grubs known as bots, which are passed per anum and become mature flies in dung or earth.
