n. plEventognathi(Zoöl) An order of fishes including a vast number of freshwater species such as the carp, loach, chub, etc.
Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia
eventognathiA large suborder of fresh-water physostomous fishes, of most parts of the world: so called on account of the peculiar development of the lower pharyngeal bones. The brain-case is produced between the orbits; the basis cranii is simple, and the anus is normal in position: there is a distinct dorsal fin; and the lower pharyngeal bones are falciform, and parallel with the branchial arches. The group embraces the cyprinids, catostomids, and cobitids; it is rated by some authors as an order equivalent to Plectospondyli, by others as a suborder of plectospondylous fishes.
