Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia
    • n auncel A kind of balance for weighing anciently used in England, apparently that variety of the steelyard commonly known as the Danish steelyard, which has a movable fulcrum and a fixed weight, the forefinger often serving as the fulcrum. It was very inaccurate, and was therefore prohibited by statute. In many parts of England the term auncel-weight is still used to signify weight, as of meat, which has been estimated by the hand without scales.
