- n Ardisia tropical evergreen subshrubs (some climbers) to trees of Asia and Australasia to Americas
Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia
- n ardisia A very large genus of tropical trees and shrubs of the family Myrsinaceæ, a very few of which are grown in hot-houses and conservatories. About a dozen species are in cultivation, but only two are generally known, and these are grown as pot-plants for their berries. They are A. crenulata, red-berried, and A. Japonica, white-berried. The former, from castern Asia, is one of the popular pot-plants, with persistent foliage and berries that remain for months or even for a year or more. It is a synonym of Icacorea.
