- n apophyge In architecture: That part of a column of one of the more ornate orders which is molded into a concave sweep where the shaft springs from the base or terminates in the capital. Sometimes called the scape or spring of the column. See order. The hollow or scotia beneath the echinus of the Doric capital, occurring in some archaic examples, and relinquished as the style advanced. Also called apophysis and congé.
