Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia
    • anomura A suborder of podophthalmous decapodous crustaceans, intermediate between the macrurous and the brachyurous groups, and embracing forms, such as the hermit-crabs, which have the tail soft and unfitted for swimming or otherwise anomalous. The section is purely artificial, and authors are not agreed upon its limitation. Families usually ranged under it are such as Paguridœ, Hippidœ, Raninidœ, Dorippidœ, etc.; the first of these includes the well-known hermit-crabs. Also spelled Anomoura.
